Tough Day at the Office

Newcastle West RFC – 13 Clanwilliam RFC – 12

We took to our home patch for the first time in this season’s league campaign welcoming Tipperary side, Clanwilliam to Cullinagh on Sunday. As always the Tipp lads brought their A game to the table and as a result we struggled to get any momentum going in a scrappy and frustrating performance. We opened the scoring on 4 minutes with a Conor Whelan penalty. We owned the ball for the next few minutes and the pressure eventually took its toll on the visitors as Richard Langford emerged from the pile of bodies that got over the line after great work in the maul. Conor converted and with the score at 10-0 to NCW, we expected to apply even more pressure on Clanwilliam. They had other ideas however and they dominated the game from then on. Our usual solid platforms in the scrum and lineout didn’t go as well as normal and as a result Clanwilliam saw plenty of the ball in our half of the field. They eventually got their try on 29 minutes to make it 10-7 to NCW and we were holding on a bit at that stage. The expected jump in performance after the break took a while to get going and again with most of the possession in the opening 10 minutes of the 2nd half Clanwilliam added their 2nd try. A difficult conversion was missed and the Tipp lads set about holding onto their 12-10. That score shook us up a bit and the intensity grew from NCW but try as we might we couldn’t unlock their defence. A series of raids into their half only resulted in a difficult long range penalty as they kept their discipline and it was only in injury time when we eventually got an opportunity from a scrum infringement to retake the lead. Conor Whelan again duly obliged and from the kickoff Clanwilliam had a series of phases but eventually we took the ball and cleared to touch.

Most definitely a case of take the points and move on. It’s another win on the board and we kept the unbeaten home league record going.

Under 18’s
Newcastle West/Estuary RFC – 27   Thomond RFC – 0

The Munster U18 league season opened with a home game against Thomond in Cullinagh last Sunday. We quickly established domination over the opposition pack and the score at half time was 17:0 to Newcastle West/Estuary. Excellent tries were scored by Mark Broderick and John Walsh after good forward drives. Colum McSweeney showed a good sidestep, to beat his opposite number and touchdown under the posts with Michael Bourke adding the conversion.
The bench was emptied in the 2nd half and 2 more tries came from John McCoy and Mark Broderick to leave the final score 27- 0.

Newcastle West – 50 Richmond – 26

It way a perfect morning for rugby last Sunday. Our under 14s hosted Richmond in a league game. We fell behind to an early score which left us in a 7-0 hole for the outset. But we kept our head down and managed to claw our way back with tries from Jack Corkery and Kevin O’Connell. Richmond hit back immediately and it was the story of the first half as Jack Corkery added his second. In what was a back and forth first period, we managed to sneak ahead just before the break when Jack Corkery completed his hat trick with a stunning solo effort. That mean the half time scores were 26-19 in favour to Newcastle West.
In the second half, our forwards showed their strength both at scrum time and with the ball in hand. We pushed further ahead with tries form captain Mike Cremin, Bobby Donovan and, a fourth from the impressive Jack Corkery. Our lads showed great restraint when Richmond became more interested in fighting than playing rugby. The final score was certainly a fair reflection of our dominance. Man of the match was Jack Corkery while Kevin O’Connell and David Walsh also played well.
Training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7:00. New players are always welcome

The Old Crescent RFC senior team continued their winning ways with a comprehensive win over Boyne RFC in Rosbrien last Saturday. Old Crescent top the Division 2C league table and are now the only undefeated team in the Division after securing four wins in the first block of four consecutive matches.

Boyne were first on the scoreboard with a converted penalty after five minutes.  I might add that, thanks to our grounds committee, match scores are now easily read on our scoreboard which has been repositioned to a prominent position on the half way line.

Shortly afterwards Crescent won a penalty in a kickable position but turned it down in favour of a line out in the corner.  Sean Monaghan secured the line out ball and Cathal O’Reilly, at the rear of a well managed maul, touched down for our first try which Larry Hanly converted.

On the quarter hour, our Captain Cathal was again to the fore when he took a quick tap and charged into the Boyne 22 before offloading to Larry Hanly who popped the ball back inside to the supporting Kevin Doyle who scored a try which was then converted by Larry.

Coming up to the half hour, centre Brian Toughy made a superb line break to take us close to the Boyne line.  The ball was recycled quickly and spun out wide to our full back Marty Ryan who scored in the corner.  The convert was missed but we were now three tries up and 19 points to 6 in front.  Boyne landed one more penalty to go into the break 10 points behind.

Crescent immediately set about securing a fourth bonus point try after the restart.  Ten minutes into the second half, Crescent again turned down a kickable penalty in favour of a line out in the corner.  The line out ball was secured and Crescent mauled effectively to the Boyne line enabling Kevin Doyle to crash over for his second try which Larry Hanly again converted.

Crescent continued to dominate the game and five minutes later we secured a fifth try when our winger Nigel Kerr scored in the corner.  The convert was missed but we now led by 31 points to 9 with about twenty minutes to go.  We lost a bit of shape towards the end of the game, as our bench was emptied, and Boyne got in for a consolation try and convert but a Crescent win was never in doubt.  The final score was Old Crescent 31 Boyne 16.

The Crescent team showed admirable confidence and ability in backing themselves by turning down three kickable penalties and securing seven points on each occasion.  Kevin Doyle was the well deserved Man of the Match.

Crescent will now take on Middleton RFC away in Middleton on Saturday, 17th October, in a match of double importance as it will double as a UBL Division 2C league clash and a Munster Senior Cup first round match.  The club will again be running a free supporters bus, details nearer the time.

Our Seniors will take a well earned rest this weekend. Our Seconds will play Thomond next Monday evening under lights in Rosbrien at 7.30pm. Out Thirds have a Gleeson league fixture against Kilfeacle at home in Rosbrien at 2.30pm next Saturday, and our Under 20s will play Young Munster in Greenfields at 2.30pm also next Saturday.

As mentioned last week, Old Crescent tickets for the IRFU ‘Your Club Your Country’ Grand Draw 2015 are now available from any committee member or from Peter Doyle 086 3861054.  This IRFU Grand Draw is an important fundraising vehicle for affiliated clubs and there are many fabulous prizes.  All the monies raised by Old Crescent RFC through ticket sales go directly to the club so please support generously.

Thurles XV’s Off The Mark

Thurles First XV – Munster Junior League

The Thurles First XV continued their unbeaten streak at home with a hard fought win over a very tough Castleisland outfit at Loughtagalla on Sunday last.

Thurles started the game like a house on fire, showing their intent early on, with great play from Conor Cooney and Larry O’Gorman in the pack in moving the ball up the field from the kick-off.

Some great interaction between the backs and forward saw Shane Moloney (B) cross the line out wide, with Aidan Dwyer excellently converting to put Thurles ahead early on, 7-0.

Minutes later, Dwyer added another score from a penalty to push the score out to 10-0, this was after some more great work from the team, especially Colm Skehan, Rory O’Dwyer & Nicky Irwin.

Thurles dominated most of the first half but Castleisland hit their purple patch before half time and added a converted try right on stroke of half time, 10-7.

The second half kicked off and the Thurles backline continued to open up their Kerry counterparts but the killer pass always seemed to go astray or was slapped down as Thurles went appeared to be cruising over the try line.

Thurles did cross the whitewash for a second time after some great play by Coman, Moloney & O’Rahelly before the ball reached scrum half Irwin who with work to do, got the ball touched down despite the best efforts of a Castleisland defender, which Dwyer converted to make it 17-7.

Thurles continued to put the pressure on on the Kerrymen but were unable to make any further breakthrough, this was before Castleisland hit another vein of form where they should have ran in under the posts but for a Peter Stringer like hand tap tackle from Peter Coman stopped the Kerry scrum half in his tracks.

Castleisland kept building on this and eventually crossed the line out wide for a well worked try which went unconverted to make the closing stages very interesting, 17-12.

Castleisland to their credit threw the sink at Thurles for the remaining minutes but the Tipp men stood tall, held their discipline and continued to deter the away side, attack after attack, much to the frustration of the Kerry men to finish the game at 17-12.

This was a great result for Thurles, as a loss to the same opposition last season derailed Thurles’ titles hopes.  This result moves Thurles right up the League table into fifth position and has set them back up for a title challenge this year again with alot of the weekend’s results going their way.

Training continues on Wednesday and Friday night, on the field and ready to go by 7.30pm.  Big numbers are expected with the seconds making their first competitive outing in the Gleeson League after a good display against Fethard in a Friendly under lights last Saturday evening.

Thurles play Waterford City at home in the Last Sixteen of the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield, Kick off for this game is 2.30pm and all support would be greatly appreciated by players and management.

Thurles Scorers: Shane Moloney (B) & Nicky Irwin (1 Try Each), Aidan Dwyer (2 Conversions & 1 Penalty).

Thurles Squad vs. Castleisland: 1. Ger McCormack 2. Dave Kelly 3. Rory O’Dwyer 4. Phil Kelly 5. Colin Feeley 6.Conor Cooney 7. Colm Skehan 8. Larry O’Gorman 9. Nicky Irwin 10. Aidan Dwyer 11. Thurles Women’s Rugby

St Senans v Thurles

Thurles Women’s RFC travelled to Shannon on Sunday to play St. Senans. Thurles were hoping to build on the success of their first game with a win but unfortunately despite a strong display in a fiercely fought battle Thurles lost on a 13 -7 score line that highlighted the intensity of a game that depended heavily on defensive tactics. St. Senans started the game well and strong tackles from Aisling O’Hagan kept the home side from breaching the try line in the early minutes of the game. St. Senans were awarded a penalty in the early stages of the game and decided to kick for the posts but the attempt was narrowly missed. Thurles now went on the attack but some heavy tackles from their opponents saw them lose possession.

Thurles were very strong in their set pieces with Megan Callanan having a very successful game kicking for touch and making good ground. Thurles were dominant in the lineouts that ensued. It was however in the scrum that Thurles really showed their dominance. Unfortunately despite wonderful first half performances from Jean Ryan and Catherine Kearney Thurles failed to capitalise on their strengths and were scoreless at half time. They  conceded a try, the result of a penalty move from the home side and when St. Senans failed to score the conversion they went five points ahead of visitors Thurles. A successful penalty just before half time saw them edge a further three points ahead. At half time the home side had an 8 – 0 lead.

Thurles were on the attack early in the second half with superb combined play with Megan Callanan, Danielle Ryan and Laura Carroll all proving their skill for the visitors. But unfortunately the home side tackled the Thurles players into touch and the chance was lost. Maria Woodlock  put in some very important tackles that say Thurles regain possession once again. Their renewed attack paid dividends when Niamh Coman went in over the line for a very deserving try. Megan Callanan slotted over the conversion with ease. Thurles were now just one point behind St. Senans.

However, just moments later a skilful kick and chase from St. Senans saw them in over the line for their second try. Once again the conversion was missed but the home side now had a 13 – 7 advantage over visitors Thurles. Thurles were the stronger side in the dying minutes of the game and on numerous occasions had great attacking lines going towards the try line but time and time again the dogged determination of St. Senans just kept them out. The game finished 13 – 7 in favour of St.  Senans but the score line failed to highlight the impressive Thurles play and their dominance in the set pieces. Thurles have no game next week so have plenty of time to regroup and strengthen their skills ahead of their next game in two weeks time.

U18s.  Fermoy 7 – Thurles 63

Thurles U18s gave a strong performance against Fermoy on Saturday. They had some great passages of play and there were plenty of tries scored. The tries came from Conor O Hagan(2), Nick Cooney, Eoin Ryan, Michael Ryan, Kieran Dunne and 4 from our man of the match Eoin Kerrane. There were also strong performances from Jack Flanagan and Jack Kavanagh. Everybody played well on the day. A great win keep up the good work boys!

Mini Rugby

Thurles hosted a mini rugby blitz on Sunday. Clanwilliam and Galbally were the visiting teams. We had a large turnout with teams playing in age grades from u7 up to u12. It was a great day of rugby which was  enjoyed by all who participated. A big thank you to all the parents who provided food for after the blitz. Training next Saturday usual time 12 – 1.30pm. New players always welcome.

Waterford City Rugby Club
Sunday October 4th was a very busy day in Kilbarry as Waterford City held their IRFU club day. The day started at 10.30am where City hosted Tramore and Clonmel for a Mini’s blitz. At 12pm the under 14’s were in action against Carrick and finally at 2pm Waterford City senior team played newly promoted Charleville. A big thank you to all to helped make the day a great success.

Match Reports:

WCRFC 27 V Charleville 5
WCRFC: 27 Tries: Jason Power, Nicky Jacob, Darren Walsh, Damien Kennedy
Conversion: Michael Hayes 2 Penalties: Michael Hayes
MOM: Jason Power (pushed hard by Joe Delahunty and Damien Kennedy)
On Sunday 4th October, Waterford City welcomed newly promoted Charleville to fortress Kilbarry. With both teams recording opening day victories, and with opening round results showing how close this league will be, City were determined to place a marker of their season intentions and were well deserving of their bonus point victory.

City began brightly with real intense and purpose to their play with the forwards punching holes in the Charleville defence and the backs exploiting the space created. With half backs Darren ‘Chicky’ Walsh and Aaron Foskin exerting a calm and purposeful influence on proceedings, Waterford City exuded an aura of a team that would not be beaten. For once, City’s scrum came under some pressure from a strong Charleville pack, but Joe Delahunty, a  revelation this season so far at eight, managing to give us go forward ball at the back of the scrum, City  scored the opening try of the game  through Jason Power. Aaron Foskin kicked us into lineout territory, with Darren Walsh marshaling the pack, Jason Power scored a well deserved try. Michel Hayes was back on kicking form and nailed a tricky conversion to put City 7-0 ahead. Shortly afterwards, from a Charleville kick, Damien Kennedy, rediscovering his best form, picked up a loose kick, handed off a defender before showing soft hands to draw and pass to Nicky Jacob for a well worked City try. Michael Hayes again converted from the touchline. At this point city were playing some great stuff with Simon O’Hara and Jason Power putting in some massive hits and Alex Fitzmaurice entering the ‘fitz’ zone clearing countless rucks and countering Charlevilles impressive front row. It was from a City scrum where Joe Delahunty picked up and drove over the gain line and offloaded neatly to Darren Walsh to canter in under the post from 50 metres giving City a 17-0 lead after 30 minutes. Charleville sprung into life and pounded the City line, ignoring the three points on offer and backing there scrum, eventually scoring a try after a number of pick and drives around the ruck.

City’s discipline waivered in the second half, but offensively they looked sharp and were guilty of wasting three opportunities for the bonus point. However, with fifteen minutes remaining, the impressive Damien Kennedy exploited a gap in the Charleville defence to poach a try and the bonus point victory was secured. City continued to attempt to keep the score board ticking over, but were reduced to 14 men after a succession of penalties at ruck time. However, City repelled Charlevilles best efforts to record a 27-5 victory leaving City with a 100% record and in third place and the best defensive record in the league.
As always, many thanks to all of our supporters and sponsors Done Deal and the Kingfisher club.
Team: Karl Reade, Colm Lynch, Alex Fitzmaurice, Jason Power, Eamonn O’Keeffe, Simon O’Hara, Tom Bowe, Joe Delahunty, Darren Walsh, Aaron Foskin, Damien Kennedy, Connor Power (captain), Michael Hayes, Aidan Power, Nicky Jacob, Dave O’Connor, Brian Walsh, Kevin Whelan, Mark Hayes, Stephen Walsh,

J2 Squad – Cashel 18 V WCRFC: 5

MOM: Liam Hayes

Waterford City traveled to Cashel for a Saturday night meeting between the two sides in favorable conditions. This was our lad’s first competitive game of the competition and we also had the opportunity to introduce some new players. We started badly conceding a converted try within the first five minutes and just did not seem to get off the blocks until John McNicholas ran in a try following a great set piece move. Cashel had meanwhile scored a second try increasing their margin to 12-5. We started to move the ball with some impressive play and covered our defense well, notably through Jim Halligan who ran over seventy meters from the opposite side of the pitch to make a try saving tackle inside our 22.

It was a game where a little lack of experience in our first game against a full Cashel side and some decisions not going our way, let Cashel run out the eventual winners of a margin 18 to 5.
While this was a negative result for us on the night, we can still take a lot of positives away with us. Our defense once we settled into the game did not allow Cashel any further incursions into our territory with some great tackling by Aaron Whelan, Connor Brennan and Elliot O Mahoney and wing Connor White. We were very strong in the line out and won all our own ball, through Kevin Whelan, Brian Kinsella, Liam Hayes and Aidan O Neill and we maintained our scrum well through Paddy Halloran, John McNicholas and Stephen O Rourke. Opposition field incursions were orchestrated by experienced Captain Liam McCarthy and Fly Half Jack Fenton. Mark Hayes covering the full back position also stood out and made his presence felt in both attack and defense. Completing the squad were veteran Mark Power, Dean Halley, Derek White, Dave Healy and Shane Purcell.

Man of the match would go to Liam Hayes for his aggressive tackling and carries throughout the match, with Paddy Halloran, Kevin Whelan, Aaron Whelan and Jim Halligan also impressing.

U18’s – Waterford City v Midleton

A young City side containing 11 of last seasons under 16’s took on a much bigger Midleton side on Saturday last in Kilbarry.

From the start it looked like a day of defense lay ahead for City as Midleton held on to the majority of possession.  City held out with great tackling in defense but eventually Midleton broke through for a number of tries before half time.

The second half was a similar story to the first. Credit to our young lads for never dropping the heads. A tough learning curve but better days lie ahead for this talented squad.

The whole squad would like to extend their best wishes to captain John Harte who suffered a nasty injury while playing for his school. Get well soon John.Newcastlewest RFC

Get well soon John.
