Thurles Seconds: Thurles 22-18 Clonmel RFC
Thurles Seconds welcomed Tipperary neighbours Clonmel to Loughtagalla on Saturday Night Lights Friendly game on last weekend. This game was arranged in warm up to the upcoming Cups that the Second XV are enterted in.

Thurles fielded an experienced side with golden relic, Ollie Geoghan reeling in the years and giving a masterclass on his season debut, with a try topping off a great personal performance. Thurles started brightest on the night with a great try off the back of a scrum, orchestrated by Conor Cooney and finished by Peter Kinane in the corner.

Thurles continued to press at the Clonmel line after some good general play from the likes of Eoin Long, Colin Feely and Dave Kelly. Thurles took their time at the line and it was Emmet Kavangh who eventually crashed over to increase the lead, with Tommy Connolly adding the extras. Clonmel had added a penalty in between the tries to have the scores at 12-3 to Thurles.

Clonmel went on to prove they weren't just in Thurles for the sake of it, they upped their game and scored a well worked try of their own to reduce the gap to 12-8, as they try went unconverted. This was the way it stayed for the remaining minutes of the first half, with a good break by Andrew Halloran the only action of note after the Clonmel try.

After some wise words at half time, Thurles hit the ground running, after some great work up front, conducted by the half back pairing of the two Ollie's, Delaney and Geoghan saw John Coman receive the ball and touch down out wide to increase the Thurles lead to 17-8. Clonmel came back at the Thurles men from the kick-off and went on to add two tries to take the narrowest of leads heading into the final 15 mintues.

It was Thurles who were well on top heading into the final ten minutes, with the substitutions aiding matters, they controlled all areas of play with some great play once again from Geoghan, the Coman brothers and Ger 'Redser' O'Grady showing great hunger. Fitting that it was Geoghan who got the final score as Thurles edged the game by a 4 point margin in the end.

This was a great run out for our 2nd XV, one of great benefit for the upcoming fixtures. Many thanks to Clonmel for visiting and for all those who came in to support the lads on what was a cold Saturday Night. Training continues every Wednesday and Friday Night at 7.30pmsharp, the 1st and 2nd Teams have a few big upcoming games and numbers are needed at training, the improvement in the Second's number since Christmas was evident in the performance on Saturday, this needs to continue in order to build on this good win.

Thurles Women's Rugby: Cobh Pirates 0 – 74 Thurles
The Thurles Women secured a fifth consecutive League victory away against Cobh with an impressive 74 point victory which easily secured their fifth bonus point from five games leaving them comfortably on top of the League table.

Thirteen tries, wonderful individual skill and comprehensive team play resulted in an emphatic victory. Aoife Healy was the first in over the line for Thurles within the opening minutes of the game. A wonderful offload from Ciara Dwyer to Ciara Quinn saw Thurles gain vital ground. The well executed pass to Aoife Healy left her in a comfortable position to cruise in over the line for a wonderful opening try to settle the nerves. The conversion attempt in windy conditions was missed by the narrowest of margins. Thurles led on a 0-5 score line.

Thurles were on the attack immediately from the re-start and Cobh barely ad to time to recover from conceding the earlier try before Rebecca Byrne coasted in over the line to score the second try of the game. With less than five minutes gone in the game Thurles were having the impressive start that they had hoped for. Rebecca Byrne, once again battled the stiff breeze, slotted over the conversion with ease to give Thurles a 0-12 early lead.

Cobh regained some composure after the second try and made some vital ground but were unable for the determination of the Thurles side. A wonderful kick and chase set up a fantastic Thurles attack. Linda Ryan and Miriam Harrison providing magnificent support play for Niamh Coman who scored an impressive try just right of the posts. The wind once again was to deny Rebecca Byrne the extra points for the conversion but Thurles maintained a comfortable 17 point lead.

Rebecca Byrne was the scorer of the all important fourth try to secure the bonus point. Miriam Harrison and Niamh Coman set up Byrne with a sequence of wonderful passes. The conversion attempt was successful. Thurles had an impressive 24 point lead, Rebeca Byrne the scorer of an impressive 14 points of the total tally at this stage.

Thurles looked impressive both in attack and in defence and are setting themselves up as a force to be reckoned with. Thurles' fifth try of the game came as the result of a great run from Aoife Healy who offloaded to Ciara Quinn who supplied Ciara Dwyer with a wonderful pass. Ciara Dwyer sailed in over the line and although the conversion attempt was narrowly missed the score was 0-29 in favour of visitors Thurles.

Before half time Thurles scored yet another try, and were unlucky not to have two more. The sixth try of the game from a lineout in a wonderful attacking position for Thurles. Megan Callanan set up Ciara Quinn who seemed to effortlessly score just right of the posts. The resulting conversion attempt from Megan Callanan was slotted over with ease. Thurles had a 36 point lead at half time and looked in total control of the game.

Despite playing against a strong breeze in the second half Thurles re-started the game with the same vigour and determination that had seen them hold their opponents scoreless in the opening half. Ciara Dwyer was once again the scorer of the seventh try of the game when she scored just right of the posts. Megan Callanan added the conversion to leave the score 0-43 in favour of Thurles.

The eighth try of the game was the result of some very fast ball through the hands of the backs, Cobh were unable to cope with the speed and skill of the Thurles attack and conceded a try. Ciara Quinn the scorer on this occasion which Megan Callanan converted to give Thurles a fifty point lead. With plenty time remaining Thurles were determined to keep adding to the points tally. Thurles piled on the pressure from the re-start and succeeded in turning over possession. A wonderful solo run from Aisling O'Hagan saw her breeze over the line to score the ninth try for the visitors. Once again Megan Callanan converted with ease and Thurles were 57 points ahead.

Elaine Molumby was unlucky not to add to Thurles points tally with a wonderful passage of play involving numerous Thurles players such as Jean Ryan. A scrum was awarded. Jean Ryan was to be rewarded for all her hard work moments later off the back of the scrum when a wonderful offload from Ciara O'Dwyer saw her power through the Cobh defence to score an outstanding try. Although the conversion attempt was unsuccessful Thurles were in complete control with a 62 point lead.

Aisling Byrne scored the eleventh try for visitors Thurles when Niamh Coman gave her a superb pass which allowed Byrne to sail in over the line and when Megan Callanan added the conversion Thurles had a 69 point lead over Cobh. It was to be lucky thirteen for Thurles who were awarded a late penalty in the dying moments of the game. The penalty was taken quickly and Thurles looked determined to score one last try. Aisling O'Hagan obliged on this occasion and though the conversion was missed the game ended on an impressive 74-0 score line to Thurles.

A wonderful, composed team performance gave Thurles the emphatic victory that they had hoped for. Thurles Women's RFC are at home to Bandon next Sunday and with the team on form a wonderful eighty minutes of rugby is guaranteed. All support would be greatly appreciated.

U-18s Friendly: Thurles 22-0 Galbally/Kilfeacle
Thurles U18s got back to winning ways with a a great 22-0 victory over Galbally/Kilfeacle (combo) under lights on Friday night at Loughtagalla. There was some great continuity play between backs and forwards. It was very hard to pick a man of the match on the night but there were two players who had outstanding performances Adam Troy and Jack Kavanagh. Well done lads. Keep it up.

Thurles U15 Boys: Thurles v Nenagh
U15s is a development year in East Munster and not all clubs have the numbers to field a team. Last saturday Nenagh travelled to Thurles to play in the u15 league. Both teams were short numbers so agreed to play fixture as a friendly. What played out next was a cracking game that had everything high scores , break away tries , good rucking and counter rucking by both teams.

The Thurles front row of Nial Tierney, Paudie O'Gorman and Adam Fogarty scrumaged well. Dirk Leimiehner and Ciaran Murphy carried the ball well with both center's Aaron Maher and Dylan O'Shaughnessy. Also a special mention to Joe Hynes who played at second row when his normal position is full Back. Thurles and Nenagh will have to meet again to decide this fixture. Thurles U-16s are away to Clonakilty in the first round of the U16 pan Munster league and everyone in Thurles RFC wish them well

Mini Rugby (U7 to U12): Fethard v Thurles Blitz
Thurles minis travelled to Fethard early on Sunday morning for a Blitz Day There were some great displays of rugby from all involved from U-7s right up to U-12s. It was great to see such good numbers traveling to the South Tipperary club on the day also. Well done to all who participated.

Next Sunday's blitz is on The Hill, in Kilfeacle. We hope to see everyone at training Saturday 12 – 1.30 and at the blitz on Sunday. Newcomers always welcome. U7s up to U12s.

Richmond Weekend Round-Up
On Friday night our Ladies played against Abbeyfeale under lights in the canal. Abbeyfeale were unbeaten coming into the game, and also winning all our previous encounters. Line-out action from the Richmond v Abbeyfeale clash

This was a game the girls were looking forward to as the previous meeting was a lot closer and our girls had come a long way since the start of the season.

Nobody expected the game would be as close, with both teams throwing everything at it but our ladies came out on top with a 5-3 win. Abbeyfeale took the lead with a Pen in the middle of the second half, but we were quick to counter back with a try from Therese O'Hanlon. The next 10 minutes were nail biting with Abbeyfeale time and time again attacking looking for the win.

I don't think you could single out any one player for their performance as everyone involved was unbelievable especially their defence. Well done to all involved, and best of luck against Bruff on Sunday.

On Saturday the senior team travelled to Greystones with the UBL starting back up again after the Christmas break. It was one of those games that you wished never happened let alone went to, we started very well with Wayne Murphy kicking 2 penalties but Greystones bounced back with 2 tries to take a 14-6 lead. We were still in the game but before half time we lost a number of players in key positions and we fell apart. It was a disappointing result but we need to bounce back this week as we play Boyne. Boyne had been 3 points behind us going into the game but they won with a bonus point against Sligo and now are 2 points ahead. This leaves us now in the automatic relegation position, so a win this weekend is imperative for us in our fight to stay senior. We will be looking for a massive home support this weekend as it's the biggest game of the season.

Our Condolences
We were all deeply saddened by the news of Sandra Slattery's Passing last week. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all the family especially Pat, David and Gerard during this difficult time. We are sorry for your loss, and you are all in our prayers and thoughts. May She Rest in Peace.

Junior Cup
Junior Cup is kicking off this Sunday at 2pm in Killarney, we have a bus going and anyone wishing to travel via bus please get in contact ASAP.

Spanish Bingo
Last Friday night we started Spanish Bingo in the Bar, The underage ran the event with the help of Niall O'Connor. This was a great evening and well done to all involved. Friday the 6th of February is the next night for the Bingo again. Thanks for your support.

New Clubhouse
We have plenty of events going on in the bar in the coming weeks keep an eye on the bar Facebook Page, and we are also accepting Bookings for parties, application forms available in the club bar.

Coaching Courses
The Munster Branch will be running mini and foundation courses on the 6th/7th of February, please get in contact ASAP if you're interested as there is limited places in these courses.

UBL Div 2B: Navan Vrs Bruff
The seniors played their first competitive game of 2015 when they travelled away to Navan on Saturday in round 9 of the UBL. Only 1 point and 1 place separated the teams going into the game so it was always going to be a tight affair.

Bruff were first to score and went into a 7-nil lead thanks to a Johnnie Clery try from the back of a well worked maul. Declan Bannon has now emigrated to NZL so Paul Downes who has taken over the kicking duties stepped up to add the conversion.

Navan hit back with 10 points of their own before half-time and went into the break 10-7 ahead scoring a converted try and a penalty, Paul Downes kicked a penalty for Bruff shortly after the restart to make it all square, before Navan scored a second converted try to make it 17-10 to the home side.

But it was Bruff who finished stronger scoring two more converted tries before the end of a 49 minute second half. Scrum half Tony Cahill provided the first of the 2 second half try's breaking from the back of a maul to go over for the 5 pointer. The final Bruff try came after player/coach Brendan Deady made a clean line break from the Bruff half of the field before linking with Bruff's openside flanker Andrew White who finished off the move in style.

Both tries were converted by Downes and Bruff made the 255km trip home happy with the 4 points on the table. The win moved Bruff up to 7th position on 24pts with 4 wins 2 draws and 3 loses.

Next up for Bruff is a home game in Kilballyowen Vrs Old Crescent. The game has a 7.30 ko on Friday night. Supporters are asked to arrive early as a big crowd is expected for this Limerick derby game.

The 2nds played Old Crescent under lights on Monday night in the last round of the Senior 2nd League. With the Junior cup just around the corner it proved a good workout with a number of returning players getting a run out before the cup begins. Bruff had trys from Eric Finn, Mark Cosgrove, Marcus Mulvihill & Mike Carroll. Owen Quinn kicked 8 points to make the score 28-16 to Bruff.

Underage Rugby
With no competitive fixtures last weekend the u16's and 17's played each other in a training game on Sunday morning. In a very competitive game the u17's eventually ran out winner by 5 try's to 6. The U-18s played St Munchins in a friendly on Friday night losing by 2 points 14-12.

The draw for the pan Munster league was made last weekend with the u16's and 18's getting very tough draws.
The U-16s are grouped with Waterford City, Dolphin, Muskerry & Killorglin, While the u18 drew Clonmel, Waterpark, Bantry Bay & Shannon. The U-18s get their campaign underway on Saturday with a home game against the Denis Leamy coached Clonmel. The games ko's at 1pm in Bruff and all support would be welcomed

Junior Cup
After a well deserved break the Junior squad have a cup game this Sunday at home to Nenagh Ormond in the Munster Junior Cup. As it's a cup game please note the earlier kickoff of 2pm as extra time will be played if necessary.

Under 18s: Pan Munster Competition starts on Saturday
After an agonising last minute defeat in the North Munster league final, our magnificent under 18s qualify for the elite competition, the Pan Munster, this Saturday when they play against the top clubs in Munster.

On Saturday, Jan 31 we entertain Cork Constitution in Cullinagh @ 12 Midday in the opening round of the competition. The following week we are again at home to Dungarven, this time with a 1pm kickoff, and our final group game is away to Midleton on the weekend of 14th/15th Feb. After those games we'd hope to be in the top 2 and qualify for the quarter finals.

This is a great bunch of lads and the future of the club, so we'd ask you to come out and support them in the games. See you all in Cullinagh on Saturday.

Under 13s: Newcastle West 73-0 Shannon
On last Sunday morning our under 13s travelled to Coonagh to take on Shannon. It was a very one sided game from start to finish, with our pack dominating the collisions and our back finding space at will. In all there were 11 tries as well as 11 try scorers.

Mike Cremin, Jack Duggan, Aaron Heffernan, Andrew Mortell, Ruadhan O'Connor, Bobby O'Donovan, Evan Sheehan, Cormac Lyons, Chris O'Riordan, Jodie Wolfe and Oliver Flanagan all crossed to get their name on the score sheet. Aaron Heffernan added 6 conversions and Andrew Mortell getting 3.

Training continues every Wednesday and Friday at 6:30. New players welcome. Our next match is on Sunday the 7th of February at home to Old Crescent

Shannon Supporters Bus to Belfast
Shannon RFC are planning to run a supporters bus on Friday February 20th for the Belfast Harlequins V Shannon AIL game. The bus will be leaving early on Friday morning with the possibility of taking a trip to the Titanic Visitors Centre. Overnight stay in Belfast on Friday night and then the bus will be dropping supporters to the AIL match on Saturday. The bus will then depart back for Limerick on Saturday evening. It will be a great trip with the chance to show the players some extra support on match day. Pricing to be confirmed.

A Message from the Branch
"Throughout the province there have been increasing reports of verbal abuse and threatening behavior at all levels of the game.
The abuse is verbal and predominately directed at referees. There have been increasing reports of instances of verbal abuse of players by opposition coaches and spectators. Some instances have been very threatening and unsavory.
This form of behavior is not warranted in our game and has no place.
We must remember that adult behavior is mimicked by the children and young men who play our game. We the coaches, managers, spectators and mentors must provide a positive role model for the players of all ages.
All clubs are responsible for the conduct of their coaches, players and spectators.
You are requested to make it clear to your coaches, players, spectators and club mentors that the verbal abuse of referees, opposition players, coaches and spectators is not acceptable.
Your help and co-operation is requested to reduce and stop such unwarranted behaviour"
