Big Upsets in Division 1 Of Junior League

Clonmel, Kanturk and Skibbereen all lost for the first time in the Munster Junior League as holders Richmond go clear with a two point lead.

The top game of the day was at Skibbereen where Richmond defeated the home side 22-17. Both of these sides went into this game on the back of defeats in the All Ireland Junior Cup last week. A try by Michael Kelleher and a conversion and penalty by Brian Mullins gave Richmond a 10-9 interval lead. Steve Hansel kicked three penalties for the home side. Ger McNamara and Emmet Harty added tries for the Limerick side after the break and Mullins converted one. Skibb’ replied with a fourth penalty from Hansel and a try by Ian Hurley.

Newcastle West ended Kanturk’s unbeaten run this season with an 8-5 home win. Paul Cotter scored a try for Kanturk to give them a 5-0 interval lead. A penalty from Tommy Kelleher reduced the deficit for the home side and ten minutes from time Brian McAuliffe scored a try for Newcastle West. Kanturk did have a chance of tying the game in the final minute when they were awarded a penalty but opted for a quick tap but the home defence held firm.

Crosshaven won their first game of the season with a 20-18 home win over unbeaten Clonmel. Crosshaven raced into an early 6-0 lead with two penalties by Ian Smith. Clonmel hit back with a try by Mark Jenkinson on eleven minutes but Rory Hofler restored the home side’s advantage minutes later with a try and Smith converted to leave it 13-5 at half time. Danny Lyons kicked a penalty for Clonmel two minutes into the second half but four minutes later Smith extended the home side’s advantage with a try and a conversion. Clonmel rallied and a try by Ger Mulcahy and a conversion and penalty by Lyons closed the gap to two points but it was not enough to keep their unbeaten league record.

Kilfeacle maintained their unbeaten run and are now in second place after their 11-0 away win over Waterpark. A try by Pat Ryan and a Shane Luby penalty had the visitors 8-0 ahead at half time. Luby kicked a second penalty after the break to secure Kilfeacle’s fourth win of the campaign.

Galbally collected maximum points with a 30-0 home win over bottom side Clanwilliam. Ian Ryan, Craig Airey, Danny Hayes and Brendan Childs scored tries for the winners and Airey kicked two penalties and two conversions.

A last minute try by Matthew Hickey helped St. Mary’s to their first victory when they defeated Cobh Pirates 14-10 at Corbally. Cobh led 7-6 at half time with a try and conversion by Eoin Geary to two penalties by Kevin South for the home side. Geary and South exchanged penalties before Hickey’s last minute try.

Tralee defeated Old Christians 25-13 at Rathcooney. Sean Hurley scored a try for Tralee and Daniel Clarke kicked a conversion and six penalties. Rob Grey replied with a try for the home side and Max Castell converted and also added two penalties.

Muskerry remain top of Division Two after their 26-13 home win over Youghal. The home side led 12-6 at half time with tries from Shane Murphy and Jonathan Buckley with Buckley also kicking a penalty. Keith McCarthy replied with two penalties for Youghal. Murphy and Eoin Corcoran added further tries for Muskerry and Buckley converted both. Alan Moloney scored a try for Youghal which McCarthy converted.

Mallow moved into second place with a 36-12 away win over Newport. Tries by Andy Cashman and John Gardiner had Mallow 17-7 ahead at half time. Cashman converted both tries and also added a penalty. Leonard Browne, Robbie Doyle and Leo O’Regan scored tries after the break, two of which Cashman converted.

Castleisland made it three wins from three with a 29-0 home win over Dungarvan. Kieran Downey scored two tries for the winners and William Nolan, TJ Casey and Shane O’Connell got one each. Con Reynolds kicked two conversions.

Kinsale defeated Bandon 22-15. Jeremy Coughlan scored three tries for the winners and Pat O’Regan got one with Peter Murphy kicking one conversion. Pat Prendergast and Tim Crowley replied with tries for Bandon and Cathal Crowley added a conversion and a penalty.

A penalty by Ian Stanley was enough to give Thurles a 3-0 home win over Ennis.

The Killarney v Carrick-on-Suir tie and the Third Division game between Kilrush and Ballincollig were postponed.

Fermoy stay top of the Third Division after their 28-13 home win over Scariff. Tries by Stephen Dunne and Peter Stapleton gave Fermoy a 10-3 half time lead. Conor McNamara kicked a penalty for the home side. Tom Griffin, Courtney Canning and Stapleton added tries after the break and Joe Lee kicked a penalty. Robbie Madden replied with two tries for Scariff.

Abbeyfeale have maximum points from their two games after their 27-7 away win over Corca Dhuibhne. Robert Brown, Adam Roche, Micheal Roche and Matthew Behan scored tries for Abbeyfeale and Tom Enright kicked two conversions and a penalty. Conachubhair Begley replied with a try for Corca Dhuibhne and Kevin Moriarty kicked the conversion.

Killorglin also picked up maximum points with a 24-9 home win over Waterford City. Peter Slattery and David O‘Sullivan scored tries for the Kerry side and Trevor West kicked a conversion and four penalties. Barry Power replied with three penalties for Waterford.

A try by Charles Blake and four penalties by Eoin Philpott helped Douglas to a 17-13 away win over Charleville. Ciaran Brown scored a try for Charleville and Ryan Brennan kicked a conversion and two penalties.
