All Ireland League Roundup 8th January

The weather again hit the All Ireland League program as the battle for play off places in Division 1A hots up.

Leaders Old Belvedere continued their good run with a 24-3 home win over Garryowen at Anglesea Road, a result that now sees the Dooradoyle side propping up the table. A Declan Cusack penalty had the visitors trailing 10-3 at half time but two late tries from Leo Auva’a and David Mongan both converted by Conall Keane secured the points for the home side.

Cork Constitution remain in second place after their 22-17 home win over St. Mary’s College. A great individual try by Frank Cogan proved the difference between the sides as the game came down to a battle of the kickers with Con’s scrum half Gerry Hurley kicking five penalties and a conversion and former UCC player Gavin Dunne replying with four penalties.

Shannon moved off the foot of the table with an excellent 38-20 home win over Blackrock College at Coonagh. Tadhg Bennett, Paul Rowley, Les Hogan, Colm McMahon and Maurice O’Driscoll scored tries for the winners and Bennett kicked five conversions and a penalty.

Young Munster won the Munster derby with an easy 35-0 victory over Dolphin at Tom Clifford Park. The home side had the game wrapped up at half time with a 23-0 lead. Mark Doyle, Matt Costelloe, James O’Neill were try scorers for the Cookies who were also awarded a penalty try. Man of the match Alan Kingsley kicked three penalties and two conversions with Willie Staunton also kicking a penalty.

Bruff’s promotion hopes in Division 1B received a set back as they lost 30-18 on the artifical back pitch in the Aviva Stadium to Lansdowne. The home side did most of the damage in the opening half as they led 25-12 at the break and extended their advantage with a fourth try minutes after the restart. Eoin Maher and Garoid Ryan scored tries for the Munster Cup winners and Bryan Cahill kicked two penalties and a conversion.

U.L. Bohemian’s poor run continued when they lost at home at Annacotty to leaders Clontarf 16-12. J.J, Hanrahan kicked four penalties for the home side.

Clonakilty recorded their first win of the league when they came from 6-0 down at half time to beat DLSP 13-9. David Paurini and Dave Lombard were try scorers for the West Cork side and Denis McCarthy kicked a penalty. Conor Hickey replied with three penalties for the visitors.

Old Crescent suffered another defeat when they lost at home to Belfast Harlequins 14-7. Eugene McGovern scored a try for the Limerick side and Fergal Lawlor converted.

Nenagh Ormond collected maximum points with a 23-16 home win over Wanderers. Ger Harmse, Stephen Carey, James Quigley and David Corcoran were try scorers for the Tipperary side and David Delaney kicked a penalty.
