It was another busy weekend in the All-Ireland League, with Young Munster chalking up their second successive win in Division 1A, and in Division 1B there were defeats for Bruff and U.C.C.

Shannon 16, Garryowen 9.

A second local derby defeat for Garryowen in the All Ireland League as they lost to Shannon at Thomond Park.

Shannon will be delighted to get back to winning way after a few recent defeats. A boost for them was the inclusion of Jerry Flannery who played the first forty minutes of this tie.

Playing with the strong wind Garryowen raced into a 9-0 lead with three penalties from Conor Murray. Gareth Quinn-McDonogh replied with two penalties for Shannon to leave them 9-6 behind at the interval.

The Shannon out half levelled with a drop goal and seale dthe points for the home side with a try which he also converted.

Old Belvedere 9, Cork Constitution 12.

Cork Constitution etched out a dramatic win at Anglesea Road with an injury time drop goal by Sean Scanlon.

A draw looked a fair result with Richard Lane scoring three penalties and Conal Keane replying with two for the home side and Andy Dunne one.

Lane had an opportunity to win it for Con’ but was off target with three minutes remaining but Scanlon popped up to make it to wins out of two for the champions.

Young Munster 15, St. Mary’s College 9.

Newly promoted Young Munster made it two wins out of two with this victory at Tom Clifford Park and now face a top of the table clash away to Cork Constitution in two weeks time.

It was scrum half Alan Kingsley who was the hero for “The Cookies”. The sides were tied 3-3 at half time with Kingsley kicking a penalty for the home side and Ian McKinley scoring for the visitors. Gavin Dunne kicked two penalties for the visitors but a drop goal and three penalties from Kingsley, the last three minutes from time secured the points for the home side.

Dolphin 16, Blackrock College 21.

Blackrock College bounced back after last week’s defeat by Cork Constitution with a narrow victory over Dolphin at Musgrave Park.

This was a very even contest that could have gone either way.

The visitors led 13-3 early on with a try from Dave Rowan and a conversion and two penalties by Dara Fitzpatrick. Barry Keeshan kicked a penalty for the home side.

Minutes before half time Eric Moloney closed the gap with a try for Dolphin which Keeshan converted to leave it 13-10 at the interval.

Keeshan tied up the scores with a penalty five minutes into the second half and this was followed by an exchange of penalties between Fitzpatrick and Keeshan.

Sixteen minutes from time a block down by Paul Graham saw the Blackrock second row gather the ball to touch down to give his side the points.

Lansdowne 61, U.C.C. 13.

The first ever game in the Aviva Stadium resulted in a big win for Lansdowne in this Division 1B clash. It was a very close fought opening half with the home side leading 16-13 at the break. Andrew Burke scored a try, conversion and two penalties for the students. However it was all one sided in the second half with the home side scoring seven tries.

Dungannon 19, U.L. Bohemian 23.

U.L. Bohemian had to withstand a late rally from Dungannon before nothing up their first league win this season at StevensonPark.

A try by Darren Moroney had the visitors trailing 9-5 at half time. Tries by Kieran Essex and Tommy O’Donnell and a conversion by J.J. Hanrahan put the home side in front and substitute Stewart Flanagan made certain of victory with two late penalties.

Bruff 18, Buccaneers 26.

Newly promoted Bruff are still in search of their first points in Division 1B after a late try by Colm Boland denied them a losing bonus point at KilballyowenPark.

This was a very keenly close contest which saw the visitors lead 13-8 at the interval. Alan Laffan scored a try for the home side and Brian Cahill kicked a penalty.

Buccaneers extended their advantage with a second try from John O’Brien and a penalty by Adam Kennedy for a 21-8 lead. A try by Peter Malone and a conversion and penalty by Cahill closed the gap to five until Boland’s late try completed the scoring.

Division 2 Roundup:

Midleton were the only Munster side to win in this Division as they traveled to Fitzgerald Park and won the local derby tie with a 23-10 win over Thomond. Mark Cosgrave scored two tries for the home side.

Like Thomond Clonakilty are still pointless after their home defeat by Corinthians. Tries by Noel O’Sullivan and Kieran Howlin and two conversions by David Paurini was not enough as they went down 36-14.

A penalty by Fergal Lawler was not enough for Old Crescent who went down to a heavy defeat at Eaton Park.

Division 3 Roundup:

Sunday’s Well moved up to joint second with a 28-5 away win over Navan. The visitors led 6-5 at half time with two penalties from Danny O’Shea to a Leigh Jackson try. After the break two tries by Chris Spearman and one by Dave Twohig and a conversion and penalty by O’Shea secured the points for the visitors.

After last week’s defeat by Nenagh Ormond, Highfield got back to winning ways with a hard earned 25-20 win over Ards at Woodleigh Park.

The home side started brightly and raced into an early 10-0 lead with a try from Ruairi O’Donovan and a conversion and penalty by Colin Mahony. The visitors came more into the game and were level 10-10 at half time.

The visitors went ahead with a penalty by Stewart Paul but tries by Dave Walker and Derek Houlihan and a conversion and penalty by Mahony gave Highfield a twelve point advantage.

The Ulster side rallied to close the gap to five points but Highfield held out for victory.
