Abbeyfeale Book Place In Martin O’Sullivan Cup Final

First try rule was enough to send Abbeyfeale through to the Martin O’Sullivan Cup Final after they finished level 15-15 with Killorglin after extra time.

Matt Behan and Donogh Kelly scored tries for Abbeyfeale in the opening half and Tom Enright kicked a conversion and penalty to give the home side a 15-0 interval lead. A late rally by Killorglin which yielded two tries sent the game into extra time but there was no further scoring and the sides were level on tries, so Abbeyfeale first try decided it.

Fermoy defeated holders Charleville 22-11 in their quarter final tie. Tries from Jeff Daly and Ian Pratt and two penalties by Daly gave Fermoy a 16-6 interval lead. Bobby Rea replied with two penalties for Charleville. Daly kicked two penalties for Fermoy after the break and Paddy Brown replied with a try for the holders. Fermoy will now play Waterford City in the other semi final.

Newcastle West playing their first home game in the First Division of the Munster Junior League were brought back to earth after last week’s away win over Clanwilliam when defending champions Richmond defeated them 44-5. Alan Roche gave the home side an early lead with a try but two penalties from Brian Mullins and two conversions of tries by Tony Flynn, Pat Humphreys and Dave Sheehan gave the visitors a 25-5 interval lead.
Further tries by Humphreys, Michael Kelleher and James Kelleher and a conversion each by Mullins and Kelleher saw Richmond take maximum points for the second week running.

Clonmel also collected maximum points to share top spot with Richmond after their 22-10 away win over Old Christians. Two tries by Jaco Oosthuysen gave Clonmel a 10-0 interval lead. The home side had to play most of the game with fourteen after one of their players was shown a red card in the opening half. Conor Mangan kicked a penalty for the home side early in the second half but Oosthuysen got his third try ten minutes from time. Rob Stapleton replied with a try for the home side and Mangan converted to leave five between them. In the final minute David Lonergan scored a fourth try for the Tipperary side and Brian Lonergan converted.

Sean Lyons missed a last minute conversion of a try by Matthew Hickey that would have given St. Mary's a one point win over Kanturk. Bryan O’Neill, Luke McCabe and Darragh Buckley scored tries for Kanturk and Darragh Meade kicked three penalties and a conversion in their 26-25 victory. Mark Gibbons and Stuart Lipper replied with tries for Mary’s and Lyons kicked three penalties and two conversions.

Skibbereen opened their campaign with a 27-18 home win over Galbally. The visitors led 18-14 at half time with tries from Patrick O’Donnell and Kevin Casey. Craig Airey kicked a conversion and two penalties. Skibbereen were awarded a penalty try and a try by Sean O’Neill, both converted by Steven Hansel. Denis McCarthy added a third try after the break and Hansel converted and also kicked a drop goal and a penalty.

Cobh Pirates travelled to Jim Slattery Park and defeated St. Senan’s 14-11. Fergal Twomey scored a try for the Pirates and Eoin Geary kicked three penalties. Stephen Ryan replied with a try for the Clare side and Phillip Noone added two penalties.

Waterpark got back to winning ways with a 25-7 home win over Clanwilliam. Adam Walsh, Eoin Duffy and Eoin Keane scored tries for Waterpark and John Flynn kicked two conversions and a penalty. Bryan O’Rahilly replied with a try for the visitors and Richard Childs converted.

Kilfeacle made it two wins from two with a 20-15 away win over Crosshaven. Jack O’Sullivan and Darren Lowry scored tries for Kilfeacle and Shane Looby added two conversions and two penalties. Eamon Ring, Kieran Doran and Cian Keegan were Crosshaven’s try scorers

In the opening series of games in Division Two Mallow collected maximum points with a 42-24 home win over Bandon. Dave Walsh scored two tries for the winners and Frank Thornton, Aidan Twomey, Leonard Browne, Leo O’Regan and Robbie Doyle got one each. Andy Cashman kicked two conversions and a penalty. Cathal Crowley scored a try, three conversions and a penalty for Bandon and Jerry and Olan Crowley each got a try.

Four penalties from Keith McCarthy helped Youghal to a 12-8 home win over Kinsale. Eddie Farran replied with a try for Kinsale and Peter Murphy kicked a penalty.

Two tries from Cian Flynn and one by Liam Ryan earned Ennis a 23-18 home win over Killarney. Dave Murphy kicked a penalty, drop goal and a conversion. Skipper Paul O’Sullivan replied with two tries for Killarney and Paudie Sheahan kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Muskerry travelled to Thurles and came away with a share of the spoils after they played out a 12-12 draw. Mark Cummins and Owen Dwyer scored tries for the Tipperary side and Dwyer kicked a conversion. Timmy Keating and John Herlihy replied with tries for the visitors and John Buckley kicked a conversion.

The two newly promoted clubs lost at home. Dungarvan went down to Newport 33-10. Phillip O’Brien scored two tries and four conversions for the
winners and Darragh Ryan, Sean Berkery and Ray Ryan got one each. Ian Walsh replied with a try for Dungarvan and Conor Foley kicked a conversion and a penalty.

A try by Alan Daly and two penalties and a conversion by Sean O’Brien earned Presentation a 13-5 away win over Carrick-on-Suir. Ed O’Donnell replied with a try for the Tipperary side.

Cork Constitution defeated Cashel 15-10 in an exciting Munster Seconds League South tie at Temple Hill. A try by Phillip O’Leary which Brian Derham converted put Con’ ahead. Cashel levelled with a try by Pat O’Connor and Ollie McGlinchey converted to leave it 7-7 at the break. Derham and McGlinchey exchanged penalties before Derham won the points for the home side with a try.

Tries from Mark Kavanagh and Padraig Molly helped Mitchelstown to a 15-8 away win over Cobh Pirates in their first ever Junior Two League South tie. Paul McGee added a conversion and a penalty.

Killarney lost at home to Castleisland 37-25. Kieran O’Grady scored two tries, two conversions and two penalties for Killarney and Shane McSweeney and Hillary McCarthy got one each.
