In the space of 14 years O’Connell made 178 appearances for his native province and following his part in Celtic League, Celtic Cup and Heineken Cup triumphs, the Young Munster clubman succeeded now Head Coach Anthony Foley as club captain in 2007, going on to become the club's most successful captain of the professional era. Under his stewardship Munster claimed a second European title in 2008 followed by league titles in 2009 and 2011.

O’Connell made the majority of his appearances alongside O’Callaghan who himself is Munster’s most capped player with a total of 268 appearances over 17 seasons. In his time in red O’Callaghan won two Heineken Cups, a Celtic League, 2 Magners League titles and a Celtic Cup.
