Munster U.21’s Prepare for Interprovincial Series

Having claimed a 21-3 victory in Leicester at the weekend, Munster U.21’s were defeated by the Munster Development XV at Tralee RFC on Tuesday night.

Munster Development Selection 19 Munster U.21 s 5

At a well attended fixture on Tuesday night in Tralee RFC, the Munster Development XV came away 19-5 victors over a gallant U21 squad. The Development squad decided to play with the elements in the first half but it was the U21’s that started brightly. Some excellent defending by the Development squad prevented the U.21 s from scoring in the opening minutes of the game, and at the quarter hour mark, the Development Selection put the first points of the game on the board. Starting from a line out on the 5 metre line, Ryan Hartigan grounded the ball from a drive. Jeremy Manning added the conversion to give the Development Selection a 7-0 lead for the remainder of the half.

After the restart, the U.21 team made some headway, but again, the solid defence of the Development Selection held firm. Ten minutes into the second half, a great break through the centre from Ian Dowling resulted in Brian Tuohy going over in the corner and Jeremy Manning again adding the points. Brian Tuohy went over for his second try just five minutes later after some good support work and handling. The final quarter belonged to the U21’s and their hard work was rewarded in the final minute when Bill Holland dived over for a try which wasn t converted.

Although disappointed in losing the fixture it was a brave performance against a more experienced and physically stronger Development XV, and excellent preparation in advance of the Interprovincial Series. The game follows the U.21 s 21-3 victory over Leicester Tigers Academy in Leicester at the weekend.

The Munster U.21 team is coached by Buccaneer s Coach Geoff Moylan. David O Mahony (Dolphin RFC) and Paul Cunningham (Garryowen FC) are Assistant Coaches. The team is managed by Donal Brennan from Shannon RFC, with Ian Costello on board as Technical Advisor.
