Brittany Selection 5 Munster 10

Munster women capped off a very successful season with a 10-5 victory in Rennes over a Brittany Region selection on Saturday.

It was a fitting end for two members of the management team, Mark Andrews and Rohan West, who are retiring from the Munster women s set up, having brought the team to four successive Interprovincial titles.

Brittany opened the scoring after 15 minutes with try in the corner after a penalty was awarded. At the half hour mark, Munster levelled the score when captain Wendy Keenan, from Ballincollig RFC, took a quick penalty and offloaded to Laura Guest who went over for the try. Munster added to their tally before half time, after a fantastic effort from the Munster pack. Clanwilliam s Tracie O Dwyer won a great ball in the lineout from Shannon hooker Regina O Reilly and the pack set up a driving maul to the line, with Keenan breaking from the back to score.

The second half remained a close affair, with Munster making a number of changes. Brittany continued to pressurise the visitors for long periods, but Munster defended well and held out for the victory. Highfield s Marie Barrett put in a great performance, as did her club mate Helen Brosnan. Shannon s Laura O Shea also stood out.

Rohan West was delighted with the performance, describing it as a very good all round performance all over the field, with experienced players and debutantes working extremely well. With the fixture looking set to become an annual event, Munster will relish the opportunity of hosting Brittany next year.
