Weekend Rugby Round Up

Garryowen have moved to the top of the First Division of the AIL after their 33-11 win over Galwegians at Dooradoyle.

Garryowen have moved to the top of the First Division of the AIL after their 33-11 win over Galwegians at Dooradoyle.

David Wallace making one of his rare appearances for the Dooradoyle side was the architect of three of his side’s tries. Ross Callaghan, Diarmuid O’Riordan, Donal Sheehan, Ray Niland and David Heaton all crossed for tries and Gerry Hurley kicked three conversions and Alan Purcell one.

In the Second Division there was mixed fortunes for the four Limerick sides. Thomond and UL Bohemian who had home games both lost. Midleton recorded their first victory of the season with an 11-6 win at Fitzgerald Park, while UL lost at home to Bective Rangers 13-9.

Old Crescent bounced back after last week’s defeat with a 9-5 victory over Terenure in Dublin and Young Munster’s returned home with the points after they defeated Waterpark 12-3. Dolphin continued their good run with a 24-10 home win over Barnhall, U.C.C. playing their opening game in the competition lost away to DLSP 16-13 and Highfield came unstuck up North, when Ballynahinch claimed the points with a 23-18 win.

All three Munster sides in the Third Division recorded victories. Sunday’s Well top the table on points difference from Clonakilty after their 41-13 win at Skerries, while Clonakilty defeated Banbridge 27-8. Bruff won their first ever victory in the AIL with a deserved 25-15 win away to Portadown.

They had tries from Garoid Ryan, Andrew Goodman and Michael Carroll. Mick Lynch kicked two conversions and a penalty and Brian Carroll added a drop goal.

All Three First Division sides in action in the Heineken Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup booked their place in the quarter-finals with victories over Third Division opposition. Nenagh Ormond’s 29-0 win over Mallow did little justice to the effort put in by the North Cork side and the winners were flattered by the final score line.

Cobh Pirates had an easy 50-5 win at home to Newcastle West and they will now face Thurles in the last eight, after the Tipperary side defeated Presentation 43-12 at Rathuard.

Dolphin are still in search of their first victory in the Munster Seconds League, after they lost at home to Shannon 29-7. Bruff moved to the top of Division Two after they defeated Old Crescent 21-10.

Cork Constitution extended their lead at the top of the Junior League South with a 20-6 win over Sunday’s Well at Musgrave Park. In the Junior South Two League Section “A”, Ballincollig have opened up a four point gap at the top of the table after their 13-6 win over U.C.C. Old Christians brought themselves back into contention in Section “B” with a 43-8 home win over Bantry Bay.

In the Gleeson League Section “B”, Thurles maintained their unbeaten run with a 19-0 win over Bruff, while Clonmel kept their play off hopes alive with a 15-14 victory over Cashel.

Garryowen and Shannon share top spot in Division One of the South Western Conference. Garryowen had a 30-12 win over Old Crescent at Dooradoyle. Young Munster came close to causing a surprise at Clifford Park, when they led Shannon 16-15 with ten minutes to go.

Darra Kennedy scored a try for the “Cookies” and Shane O’Brien kicked a conversion and three penalties. Shannon came with a late rally which yielded a try and penalty for a 23-16 win.
