Weekend Round Up

In Division 1 of the A.I.L. Garryowen maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 24-10 away win against Carlow.

In Division 1 of the A.I.L. Garryowen maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 24-10 away win against Carlow.

The Limerick side had two tries form Ray Niland and one from Anthony Kavanagh, with Gavin Hurley converting them all and adding a penalty goal to their tally. The hosts replied with a try, a conversion and a penalty.

Holders Shannon began their defence of the title with a 24-11 home win against Blackrock. Cork Constitution’s campaign did not get off to the best of starts, when they lost 18-12 under lights against Buccaneers at Dubarry Park.

In Division 2, Munster Senior Club League Section toppers U.L. Bohemian continued their good run with a 17-15 win at Parsonstown over Barnhall. Shannonside neighbours, Old Crescent lost by three points against relegated St. Mary’s at Rosbrien, going under 34-31.

Dolphin, who were relegated with St. Mary’s last season, also got their A.I.L. campaign off to winning start in Limerick. They defeated Young Munster 22-15 at Tom Clifford Park. Newly-promoted Highfield opened their account with a 37-25 home win against Thomond in a thrilling encounter at Woodleigh Park.

Midleton, who are without a win so far this season, also got their A.I.L. campaign off to a disastrous start, going under 16-5 at home to D.L.S.P.

In the game of the day, Bruff’s first season in Division 3 of the competition did not get off to the best of starts, as they lost 29-10 at home to Clonakilty. The West Cork men continued their good form after finishing in second place behind Garryowen in their Section of the Munster Senior Club League.

Gary Cribb scored a try, a penalty and three conversions for the visitors, with his team’s other scores in the form of tries from Declan Coppinger, Leonard Harte and Noel O’Sullivan. The South Limerick side’s scorers were Ivan O’Gorman and Cormac Hayes with a try a piece.

Relegated Sunday’s Well, who are playing in Division 3 for the first time in their history, got off to a winning start by beating Suttonians on a 24-8 scoreline at Musgrave Park.

In the Munster Junior League, title favourites, Nenagh Ormond got their League campaign back on track, with a 28-13 home win against Section toppers, Clonmel at Ormond Park. The North Tipperary side are now in fourth place behind their South Tipperary neighbours, who slipped back to third.

Skibbereen go top after a 37-5 home win over Kanturk, while Youghal go second after beating St. Mary’s on a 17-8 scoreline at Corbally. Elsewhere, Castleisland recorded their first win of the campaign, 22-9 at home against Abbeyfeale.

In the Tipperary derby at Cashel, the home side went third in their Section, beating Clanwilliam 20-13. Neighbours, Kilfeacle go second after an 18-8 home win against Charleville. Table toppers Crosshaven recorded a 36-0 victory at home against St. Senan’s, while Clare neighbours Ennis ran out 59-3 winners in their own back yard against Fermoy. The North Cork side remain bottom of the Section.

Cobh Pirates go top of their Section with a 13-3 victory away against Tralee, which leaves the Kerry side still seeking their first win of the campaign. In the Cork derby at Old Chapel, Bandon beat Old Christians 11-7 to go third behind Thurles, who defeated Muskerry at Ballyanley, 18-3. At Richmond Park, the home side recorded their first League win, 45-20 against Waterford City.

In Division 3, table toppers, Douglas collected maximum points from their trip to the Banner County, when they defeated Kilrush 37-0. It is also the Clare side’s first match of the campaign.

At Carrick-on-Suir, the hosts recorded their second victory over Dunmanway this season, on a 27-6 scoreline. They had already met in the first round of the Junior Clubs’ Challenge Cup, with the Tipperary side winning in their visitors’ back yard. Carrick’ are now in second place behind Douglas.

At Rathuard, Presentation and Ballincollig began their campaigns in the competition, with the Shannonsiders running out 18-8 winners.

Elsewhere, Galbally had a 42-11 home win against Kinsale, Mallow trounced Dungarvan 61-5 and Newport defeated Newcastle West on an 18-7 scoreline.

In the Munster Senior Seconds’ League Division 1, Cork Constitution ran out 39-0 winners over U.L. Bohemians at Temple Hill. Sunday’s Well recorded a surprise 43-0 victory over Dolphin at Musgrave Park.

In Division 2 Bruff recorded a 17-8 home win against Waterpark. In the Limerick derby at Rosbrien, Old Crescent were 32-20 winners over Young Munster and U.C.C. defeated Clonakilty 22-0 at Curaheen Road.
