Inaugural Topflight Schools Rugby Sevens

The inaugural Topflight Sevens competition took place in Crescent College Comprehensive on Saturday the 21st of April.

The competition was attended by teams from all four provinces, with Munster represented by Crescent College Comprehensive, Ardscoil Ris, St Munchins College and Glenstal Abbey.

The senior competition was keenly contested with all Munster sides reaching the knockout stages. Ardscoil Ris topped their group with victories over Ashfield, Kilkenny College and The Highschool Rathgar. They defeated Glenstal Abbey 35-0 in the quarter final to progress to the semi-final, where they played St. Munchin’s College in what was one of the games of the tournament.

St. Munchin’s led 5-0 at half time, but Ardscoil Ris rallied in the second half to run out 19-5 winners.

The other semi-final resulted in a win for Belvedere College over home team Crescent College.

Ardscoil Ris and Belvedere College contested the final in challenging conditions. Heavy showers eased as kick-off time approached. A good start from Ardscoil resulted in a try for Colin Ryan. Incessant pressure from Belvedere was only contained by the excellent Ardscoil defence. Prop Conor Glynn scored again for Ardscoil in the second half to seal victory in what was an excellent tournament.

The event was recorded by TG4 and will be aired on the 30th of May.
