Simon Kerr did not play his first game of rugby until he was 20, and even then only played his initial couple of seasons socially. He grew up in rural New South Wales, and played Australian Rules (AFL) during the formative years of his sporting life.

"I played a bit of schoolboy stuff - I made my school's first 18, but nothing too high," he said, describing his background in Aussie Rules. "Football, whether it be AFL or rugby, has always been my sport, I was never really bothered with tennis, cricket or sports like that."

Simon was introduced to rugby while studying at Wagga Wagga's Agricultural College.
