Report | Munster Take Three Points Home From Belfast

Dan Kelly celebrates his try.

Munster took three points home from Belfast after a 26-all draw against Ulster on Saturday evening.

A strong first-half performance, aided by a dominant scrum, saw Clayton McMillan's side lead 26-5 at the break.

Two tries from Alex Kendellen and one each from Marnus van der Merwe and Dan Kelly saw Munster rack up a four-try bonus-point in the opening 40.

The second half was a completely different game with Ulster scoring three unanswered converted tries to snatch a draw.

Both sides could have won it in a frantic finale but a draw was a fair result.

Three changes to the matchday squad before kick-off saw Shay McCarthy start on the wing with Max Clein and Michael Foy joining the replacements. Shane Daly, Diarmuid Barron and Tom Ahern were all withdrawn with knocks as Foy made his senior debut and Clein made his URC debut.

Munster made an excellent start, winning two scrum penalties in the opening minutes. Craig Casey thought he had scored from close range but the TMO ruled it short and Munster went to the corner with Kendellen getting his first.

Ulster hit back immediately following a Munster knock-on shortly after the restart with Jacob Stockdale scoring in the left corner off a backline move.

The Munster pack went to work and Player of the Match van Der Merwe scored from a powerful maul.

JJ Hanrahan landed a superb touchline conversion to make it 12-5.

A Cormac Izuchukwu yellow card for a dangerous clearout after 29 minutes was punished clinically by Munster. Kendellen executed a superb 50:22 after an Ulster error and Kelly raced in to score after a fantastic delayed pass from Hanrahan put him through a gap.

Munster clinched a four-try bonus-point on the stroke of half-time with Kendellen scoring his second from close range.

Hanrahan landed his third conversion to give Munster a 26-5 interval advantage.

Ulster started the second half eager to get back into the game and Munster were on the back foot from the first play.

Gavin Coombes, Kendellen and van der Merwe all came up with big turnovers at the breakdown to quell Ulster attacks.

The hosts were back in it on 52 minutes after Stockdale scored his second after a flowing move with Rob Baloucoune giving the scoring offload.

Dave McCann went over for Ulster's third on 68 minutes after Jamie Benson kicked into our 22 and a crooked Munster lineout allowed Ulster set up the score from their lineout.

The Munster scrum earned another penalty on 70 minutes and Charlie O'Shea stepped up for the long-range effort. The 20-year-old was hampered by the ball falling off the tee and he had to rush his effort that didn't have the legs.

Ulster drew level after 77 minutes as Stuart McCloskey scored after a siege on the Munster try-line.

Jack Murphy's conversion made it all square and despite a helter-skelter final three minutes, neither side were able to snatch the victory.
