The son of former Munster flanker Ger, he caught the eye at Schools level and since representing Ireland at that level has also featured on the Ireland U20 Grand Slam winning side. Made his first appearance for the Munster senior side as a replacement in the game against Ospreys at The Liberty Stadium (Apr 07) and the highlights since then include, a place on the bench in the 2008 Heineken Cup final;  a hat-trick of tries in the Magners League game against The Dragons in Musgrave Park (Sept 08); the inevitable first senior cap against Canada in Thomond Park Stadium two months later; a Magners League winning medal in April 2009 and a Lions debut in the opening tour game against a Royal XV in Rustenberg.
