From Rathangan in Co. Kildare, the former Newbridge College pupil joined Munster after five seasons at Leicester Tigers where he was top try scorer in 2008/09.

The switch to Munster in 2010 started well and Murphy opened his account for the province with a brace of tries in his third outing (v Glasgow Warriors in Firhill) in a season that saw him appear 25 times for his new club.

His continued good form into the following season earned Murphy a two-year contract extension in March 2012.

Scored his first try of the 2013/14 season in the 26-10 win against Gloucester at Thomond Park in the Heineken Cup.

Murphy made his 70th Munster appearance against Connacht in December 2013.

Signed a one-year contract extension in April 2014 that will see him remain with the province and the IRFU until June 2015.

Named on Emerging Ireland squad for tour to Romania, June 2014.
