Another product of the Munster Academy, his father Gerry was on the famous Munster side that defeated the All Blacks in 1978.
 
Denis made his first competitive start for Munster against Llanelli Scarlets in Stradey Park in May 2006. He added just one cap to his total the following season but in 07/08 became something of a cause celebre when preferred to Shaun Payne for the Heineken Cup quarter final clash with Gloucester at Kingsholm.
 
He won his first international cap (v USA in Santa Clara California) and a Churchill Cup medal with Ireland A in summer 2009.
