Played on the same Ireland Schools side as international teammate Gordon D’Arcy and five consecutive games for Ireland Under-21s with Donncha O’Callaghan as his second row partner.
Scored a try on his senior international debut v Wales and won the Grand Slam under Declan Kidney in 2009.
Played three Tests for the British and Irish Lions in New Zealand in 2005 and in 2009 captained the squad in South Africa. Toured with the Lions for the third time in 2013 as they successfully overcame Australia, although O' Connell fractured an arm in the second test.
Captained Munster to their second Heineken Cup title in 2008 and also led the side to two Magners League trophies, in 2009 and 2011.
Returned to the Munster side in late September as a substitute against Newport Gwent Dragons after recovering for the arm injury he picked up with the Lions.
Awarded the Irish captaincy by Joe Schmidt ahead of the 2013 autumn internationals.
Played 80 minutes in each of Munster's first five Heineken Cup games of 2013/14 and was awarded Man of the Match in the 20-7 win against Gloucester at Kingsholm.
Named in the Ireland squad for the 2014 Six Nations.
