A native of Limerick, Paul initially excelled at swimming before turning to rugby.

While attending Ardscoil Rís a young O'Connell competed in the Munster Schools Senior Cup after which he won inclusion in the Ireland Schools side of 1997/98 alongside fellow international teammate Gordon D'Arcy.

He went on to play five consecutive games for Ireland Under-21s with Donncha O’Callaghan as his second row partner.

In making his senior debut against Bath in Thomond Park in August 2001 in the Brazen Head Trophy, O'Connell went on to make his competitive debut a week later against Edinburgh in Myreside.

O'Connell won his first international cap within six months of making his Munster debut. Then Head Coach Eddie O'Sullivan included him in the starting line-up against Wales in the 2002 6 Nations and the 21-year-old rewarded the faith shown by O'Sullivan in crossing for a try in Ireland's comprehensive 54-10 victory on the day.

In terms of international silverware he can boast four Triple Crowns, two 6 Nations championships and one Grand Slam amongst (2009) his repertoire.

In 2006 he was nominated for IRB World Player of the Year.

Played three Tests for the British and Irish Lions in New Zealand in 2005 and in 2009 captained the squad in South Africa. Toured with the Lions for the third time in 2013 as they successfully overcame Australia, although O' Connell fractured an arm in the second test.

Captained Munster to their second Heineken Cup title in 2008 and also led the side to two Magners League trophies, in 2009 and 2011.

Awarded the Irish captaincy by Joe Schmidt ahead of the 2013 autumn internationals.

Captained Ireland to the Six Nations Championship in 2014. Missed the opener against Scotland with a chest infection before returning to play the remaining four games in the successful campaign.

Earned his 75th Heineken Cup cap in Munster's quarter final victory over Toulouse and in the same game scored his first Heineken Cup try since 2008.

Included in the Ireland squad for the 2014 summer tour to Argentina.

Made his 100th test appearance in Ireland's first test against Argentina, June 2014. O'Connell had won 93 caps for Ireland and 7 for the British & Irish Lions.

Featured for (and captained) Ireland in the Guinness Series victories over South Africa and Australia in November 2014.  Went on to captain Ireland to a second successive 6 Nations Title in March 2015.  During the campaign he became the 4th Irish International to reach the 100 cap milestone when lining out against Wales.

Awarded the 2015 RBS 6 Nations Player of the Championship and in May was voted the IRUPA Player's Player of the Year for the second time after also winning the accolade in 2006.

Played in Munster's successful Guinness PRO12 semi-final against Ospreys in May 2015 after which he confirmed it was the last time he would probably play in Thomond Park for Munster.

In making his 178th appearance for Munster he started against Glasgow Warriors in the PRO12 final in Kingspan Stadium on May 30th 2015, in what was his last game for the province.
