Outstanding performances for Dolphin in the All Ireland League earned the then 26-year-old a development contract at the start of the 2006/07 season and the following season he progressed to a full contract.
The Corkman made his first appearance in a Munster jersey in a pre-season game against Leicester Tigers in August '06 in Musgrave Park, marking his debut performance with a try in injury time. His first competitive start followed a week later away to Cardiff Blues in the Magners League.
Coughlan made his Heineken Cup debut off the bench the day Leicester Tigers became the first side to defeat Munster in Thomond Park in January '07.
Soon established himself as a regular in the squad and in recent seasons has become one of Munster's most consistent and regular performers.
He captained the side that defeated the touring Australians (Nov 2010) and that season was the unaminous choice as Munster Rugby Player of the Year. Was also shortlisted for the award in 2012.
Couglan has been called up by Ireland on numerous occasions and played in the uncapped match against the Barbarians in May 2012.
Early in the 2012/13 season Coughlan picked up a groin injury against Ulster in the RaboDirect PRO12 and was out of action until December. In January '13 he signed a two-year contract extension with Munster that will see him stay with the province until the end of 2014/15.
In February 2013 he captained the Irish Wolfhounds against England Saxons at the Sportsground.
Captained Munster against Connacht in December 2013 and was awarded man-of-the-match for his stellar performance in the 22-16 PRO12 win.
Continued his superb form into 2014 and picked up his third man-of-the-match award of the season against Cardiff Blues in February.
Once again was shortlisted for the Munster Player of the Year award in May 2014. Picked up the IRUPA O2 Unsung Hero Award for season 2013/14.
In late May Munster Rugby accepted James' request for an early release from his contract, with French side Pau confirming in early June that the backrow would join the club on a two-year contract.
