All Ireland medal winner with Garryowen, as a club player he represented Munster in the May 2006 Magners League game against Ospreys coming on as a second half replacement.
Was also on the bench the following weekend against Scarlets at Stradey Park. Moved to London and a contract with London Wasps in 2008 and played in two Premiership games.
Returned to Limerick at the start of the 09/10 season and to the Munster side for the opening game against Sale Sharks at Musgrave Park.
Played his first game for Ireland against Australia in June 2010.
Made his 100th appearance for Munster against Newport Gwent Dragons in September 2013 at Musgrave Park.
Varley has captained Munster twice this season and produced a man of the match performance in the 12-6 win over Ospreys at the start of October.
Named in the extended Ireland squad for the 2014 Six Nations.
Suffered delayed concussion folling the Heineken Cup game against Edinburgh in January 2014 and missed a number of weeks as he followed the IRB return-to-play protocols.
Included in the Ireland squad for summer tour to Argentina, 2014.
Currently rehabbing following surgery on his foot in October.
