All Ireland medal winner with Garryowen, as a club player he represented Munster in the May 2006 Magners League game against Ospreys coming on as a second half replacement.

Was also on the bench the following weekend against Scarlets at Stradey Park. Moved to London and a contract with London Wasps in 2008 and played in two Premiership games.

Returned to Limerick at the start of the 09/10 season and to the Munster side for the opening game against Sale Sharks at Musgrave Park.

Played his first game for Ireland against Australia in June 2010.

He then started in Munster's historic win over Australia in Thomond Park in November 2010 and was the starting hooker in the province's Magners League winning Grand Final against Leinster in May 2011.

Made his 100th appearance for Munster against Newport Gwent Dragons in September 2013 at Musgrave Park, and produced a man of the match performance in the 12-6 win over Ospreys at the start of October.

During the 2013/14 season he captained the side on 8 occasions, leading the side against Toulon when making his first Heineken Cup semi-final start in May 2014.

Named in the extended Ireland squad for the 2014 Six Nations but played no part when following return to play protocols at the time.

Included in the Ireland squad for summer tour to Argentina, 2014 where he made his final international appearance.

Started the 2014/15 season rehabbing a foot injury and following ongoing rehabilitation he made his one and only appearance of the season as a replacement against Leinster in October.  Ongoing persistent symptoms restricted his ability to train and play further, and he required surgery later that month.

In February 2015 he was forced to retire from the game due to a left foot injury he sustained at a training session in July 2013.
