After playing his first game for Munster A against Connacht Eagles in a pre-season game in August 2012 James went on to make his British & Irish Cup debut against Rotherham Titans in December.
He claimed his first senior cap in the RaboDirect PRO12 game against Leinster in Thomond Park in April 2013 and was voted Academy Player of the Year in May.
After 2 years in the academy programme, the prop was rewarded with a development contract for season 2013/14.
Cronin featured in both pre-season games against Gloucester and London Irish in August 2013 and capped his first competitive start for Munster against Edinburgh at Musgrave Park in September with a try. Went on to make his Heineken Cup debut against the same side in October in Murrayfield.
Continued his impressive early season form into December and was rewarded with a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the province until at least June 2016.
Following an ankle sprain, made a return to competitive action for Munster against Toulon in the Heineken Cup semi-final on April 27th 2014 and closed the season out with 26 appearances for the province.

Won his first Irish senior cap coming on as a replacement in Ireland's second test against Argentina, June 2014.
Named in the Ireland squad for the 2015 6 Nations and made his 6 Nations debut coming off the bench against Italy in Rome.
Sustained a knee injury in during the game, requiring a procedure that week which ruled him out for the next month.
Returned to the side towards the end of the season making two appearances, including one off the bench in the PRO12 final defeat to Glasgow.
Part of the Emerging Ireland squad that won the 2015 Tblisi Cup in Georgia.
Sustained an ankle injury against Leinster in December '15 ruling him out of the opening weeks of action for 2016.
Impressive form on his return saw the loosehead included the Ireland squad for the 2016 RBS 6 Nations where he featured off the bench against France.
Signed a three-year contract extension that will keep him at the province until at least June 2019.
