A former Colaiste Chriost Ri student Holland is a product of the Munster Youths system and plays his club rugby with Cork Con.
He made his British and Irish Cup debut coming on as a replacement in Munster's away win to Neath in November 2011 and made his senior debut against La Rochelle in the opening pre-season game in August 2012. He also made the move up to the academy at the start of the 2012/13 season
Holland was then awarded the 2012/13 Ulster Bank Young Player of the Year Award for Division 1A.
As a second year academy player Johnny featured in both SEAT Series games in the 2013/14 pre-season and made his league debut in November, replacing JJ Hanrahan in Munster's Round 8 PRO12 clash against Cardiff Blues.
Holland advanced to a Senior Development Contract for the 2014/15 season.
Tore his hamstring lining out for Munster A against Nottingham in the B&I Cup in November 2014, a long-term injury that kept him sidelined until March 2016 where he returned to action against Newport-Gwent Dragons at Thomond Park.
While rehabbing, Holland signed a two-year contract extension, moving from development to full status for the second year (2016/17).
Finishing the 2015/16 season strongly, the out-half made five consecutive starts and scored his first competitive try for Munster against Leinster at the Aviva Stadium.
