A combination of a move in employment and family circumstances had a major bearing on Geoff's decision and although severely disappointed, the Shannon RFC Executive Committee are fully understanding of his motives.
Every member of Shannon RFC is deeply grateful to Geoff Moylan for his unstinting commitment and dedication throughout his tenure, during which time he guided his side to a further two AIB All Ireland League Titles for Shannon, three Munster Senior Cups, three Munster senior Leagues and, a Limerick Charity cup. Despite stepping down from coaching duties for the present, Geoff will not be severing his ties with Shannon and will continue to be a valued advisor to the Club.
Whist Geoff's decision was a blow, Shannon RFC are delighted to be in a position to name his successor as Shannon, Munster and Ireland legend, Michael Galwey.
The great Gallimh has been involved with Shannon for almost 20 years and his appointment as Senior Coach is a natural progression for a man who has achieved almost everything that playing rugby has to offer. Six AIB All Ireland league titles and 10 Munster Senior cup medals has made him the most successful club player in Irish Rugby.
His exploits with Munster, Ireland and the Lions are well documented and his wealth of experience makes him the ideal choice to coach the most successful rugby club in Ireland. Ingrained with the ethos that has been so important to Shannon RFC in its 120 year history, Michael will no doubt ensure that his side will continue in the same vain.
Shannon RFC's commitment to Irish rugby is once again demonstrated in their appointment of another indigenous Irish coach, a situation which they have never deviated from over the years.
The position of coaching a First Division All Ireland league side is by no means an easy task, but the Executive of Shannon RFC are confident that Michael Galwey is the man to maintain the Club's position in the upper echelons of Irish Rugby, and will afford him the complete and unequivocal support of members, players and followers of our great club.
