They were still in contention at the break but Man of the Match Daniel Carter blew them away in a second that was almost totally dominated by the home side.
Carter landed an early penalty and then scored a brilliant individual try which he converted from the touchline and incredibly with just 44 minutes of the game gone, the outcome was really beyond doubt.
The outstanding Simon Easterby threw his side something of a lifeline with a try at the start of the final quarter but Carter struck again with a 69th minute try and his conversion of Richie McCaw's try was the out-half's ninth successful kick from 10 attempts.
The Lions got off to a dream start with a try after just two minutes from skipper Gareth Thomas. It might have been even better had Wilkinson landed a fith minute penalty as the Lions dominated a clearly rattled home side.
But just prior to that the Lions had a wonderful opportunity for a second try when Dwayne Peel broke from his own 22 and just failed to pick out the supporting Ryan Jones with the Blacks' defence struggling to recover.
Two Daniel Carter penalties eased the home supporters nerves and then the Blacks went in front when Tana Umuga picked up a dropped ball on his own 22 and set off upfield. His pass went to Carter who returned the compliment for the All Blacks captain to score.
Carter added the conversion and a penalty while Wilkinson landed two but Sitiveni Sivivatu scored his side's second try, brushing past Shane Williams in the 32nd minute for 21-13 interval lead to the Blacks.
