HEINEKEN MUNSTER JUNIOR LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION FINAL

Nenagh Ormond 14 Cobh Pirates 9 (Nenagh, 2.30pm)

Nenagh Ormond have won the Munster Junior League First Division title and earned themselves a place in the All Ireland Round Robin series after defeating Cobh Pirates on a 14-9 score line in Nenagh on Sunday.

It was a close game throughout, with neither side exerting clear dominance. Nenagh opened the scoring with a try from prop Michael Slattery, which wasn t converted. Cobh Pirates talented out half Brendan Ronan replied with a penalty shortly after. Liam Delaney at full back for Nenagh added another three points to their tally with another penalty, with Ronan coming back with two more penalties before half time, to give Cobh a one point lead at the break. After the restart, Nenagh s out half John Keehan slotted a drop goal over the cross bar to give them the edge. The scoring was completed with Liam Delaney kicking a penalty to seal the 14-9 victory.

With so much to play for, the game was a tense one, with Nenagh dominating territorially but Cobh Pirates defending well. Given the tense nature of the game, handling errors on both sides prevented them from realising their scoring potential, keeping the game close. Nenagh Ormond now have to defend their Munster Junior Cup title, after a quarter final win over Dolphin secured their semi final place. The League win on the back of some excellent recent results puts them well in position to retain the Cup title.
