Five hundred and forty children from schools all over Cork City and county descended on Musgrave Park on Wednesday for the IRFU Coca Cola Tag Rugby Regional Blitz.
Thirty six primary schools were represented by a panel of fifteen children, who played ten aside, 20 minute games. The focus of the blitz centred on the demonstration of Fair Play rather than winning, with the children encouraged to improve their team skills in a non competitive environment. Coca Cola are sponsors of this initiative, and also supplied product on the day.
From the regional blitz, four teams will be chosen by the referees to go forward to the Munster Extravaganza in Limerick on March 29th. Similar regional events are taking place all over Munster, and four teams from each country in the province will take part in the Munster Extravaganza.
Twenty eight local blitzes have already taken place in venues all over Munster in the last number of months.
Ultan O' Callaghan, Provincial Development Manager said that this competition run through the Kellogg s sponsored Youth Development Officer Scheme is an important vehicle for increasing participation numbers in rugby. In total over 10,000 primary school children participated in the programme this year.
The success of the programmes is down to hard work and voluntary efforts of teachers, coaches, parents and of course the Youth Development Officers. The Munster Rugby Development Office would like to extend our thanks to all involved in helping promote rugby across the province with fun and enjoyment as the central theme.
