Christy Cantillon has been named as Cork Constitution's new coach for the coming 2002/2003 season. The former Munster and Ireland A player has replaced Brian Hickey who takes up his new position as assistant to Munster manager Alan Gaffney. Cantillon's name has acquired folklore status in the province since scoring 'that try' during Munster's enthralling 12-0 victory over the All-Blacks in  Thomond Park in 1978. In fact Cantillon's experiences with New Zealanders goes back to 1976 when he toured with Ireland to the Land of the Long White Cloud and was unlucky not to be capped. The former CBC and UCC player was with Cork Con throughout the Seventies and Eighties as a wing forward, and in 1989 during his last season was a non-playing captain when Cork Con last captured the Munster Senior Cup. In the inaugural year of the AIL (1990/91), Cantillon was installed as coach at Temple Hill. In a season of highs and few lows, a Michael Bradley-inspired Con brought the All-Ireland title to Cork. Cantillon came back to Con during the 1995/96 season as coach in an era when Shannon were kings. And last year Christy brought Crosshaven to the final of the Munster junior Cup where they lost out narrowly to Kilfeacle. Cantillon faces a huge challenge at Cork Con this season as he takes on a squad who have lost back-to-back AIL titles. His assistant will be Michael Bradley who led Con to their last AIL success in 1999.
