The home side had the chance to go in front when awarded a penalty in the 10th minute but their out-half Mike Hercus' effort went left and wide. When Munster were awarded a penalty five minutes later Paul Warwick kicked a clever cross-field kick but Mick O'Driscoll,  was bundled into touch in goal by two defenders.

Just after the twenty minute mark, after the obligatory break for water, Hercus was on the mark with a penalty after John O'Sullivan was penalised. 

Hercus extended the lead with his second successful effort in the 32nd minute, Lifeimi Mafi penalised for blocking but Mafi's break minutes later afforded Munster's their best opportunity, the chance lost when O'Sullivan was penalised for crossing as John Kelly sped for the line.
