Women's Rugby has developed into one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Over the last few years Tag Rugby has been introduced to numerous Schools around the Province.
Due to the continued growth and success of Tag Rugby in secondary schools, the IRFU introduced the "Play Rugby" initiative, to encourage young children to play rugby and learn more about the game through soft contact/touch games such as Leprechaun Rugby.
Full details about the 'Play Rugby' initiative can be found here.
• Is a fast and exciting soft contact game of Touch Rugby, encouraging the development of running, balancing and handling skills.
• Educates players on the use of scrums and lineouts in a non contested safe environment.
• Is a very flexible sport that can be played by any number of players and the pitch can be increased and reduced accordingly.
• Can be played on a variety of surfaces.
Over the last number of years there has been a 7s girls only schools competition which as of last year progressed to 10-a-side due to the increased numbers of girls participating in rugby in school.
The girls participate in contact games in a blitz format over 3 or 4 days with the winners of the competitions over the years enjoying training sessions with Munster Rugby players.
