Midleton College's reign as Mungret Cup holders for the past three years came to an end at Clonmel; when Newtown School made amends for their defeat in the previous two finals with a deserved 15-8 victory.
Playing into wind in the opening half Midleton opened the scoring after twenty minutes when good work in the pack led to second row Charlie OSullivan touching down.

The Waterford side hit back and eventually Morgan McCormack found a gap in the Midleton defence to score under the posts and Eoin OConnor converted. A penalty on the stroke of half time by OConnor had Newtown 10-5 in front.

Twelve minutes into the second half Daniel Pim extended Newtowns lead with a try and they looked in complete control until Colin OBrien kicked a penalty for Midleton approaching the final minute of normal time.

Midleton did launch a late assault to try and draw level but Newtown held out for a famous victory.
