Weekend Preview
9 September 2009, 10:57 am
The ODM Munster Senior Cup dominates the weekend's action with eight ties down for decision.
The top game should be the all First Division clash at Dooradoyle between Garryowen and Dolphin. The Limerick side are still reeling following their shock defeat at home to U.L. Bohemian in the Charity Cup last week, while Dolphin go into this tie on the back of two big wins over Clonakilty and Highfield. It should be close but home advantage may give Garryowen the edge.

Holder's Cork Constitution begin their campaign with a trip across the City to Sunday's Well and having defeated the Third Division side 24-5 last week in the Charity Cup they should record another victory.

Old Crescent who reached last season's final face a daunting task away to U.L. Bohemian. These sides met earlier in the season in the Charity Cup with victory going to the Annacotty side 40-17 and while the margin may not be as big U.L. should continue on their unbeaten run.

Young Munster another side who have had a good opening to the season travel to Bruff and boosted by last week's win over Shannon will be confident of booking their place in the Second Round.

Cup specialists Shannon should bounce back to winning ways when they travel to Clonakilty and home advantage may also see Thomond edge out Highfield.

U.C.C. make their first appearance of the season when they travel to Midleton. The students have lost several of last season's promotion winning side and will do well to advance to a second round meeting against either U.L. Bohemian or Old Crescent.

There is a big local derby in Tipperary when Junior side Cashel entertain Nenagh Ormond. Cashel had a great run in this competition a few seasons ago but find themselves short several of the players that played with them in their recent good run that saw them win two league titles in the past two years. These sides have had many a great battle over the years but Nenagh's experience should see them advance.

The Transfield Cup is down to the quarter final stage and there are some intriguing clashes. Richmond after their 25-3 away win over Newcastle West last week will have a home tie against Garryowen. This will be a good test for the junior club side and a win would be a big boost to their hopes of a good league campaign. This will be Garryowen's first outing and they will have to await to see what players will be available to them depending on who plays in their first side on Saturday.

Holder's U.L. Bohemian follow up their 15-5 away win last week over Bruff with a trip to St. Senan's and their early season preparations should give them an advantage.

Presentation who caused a surprise by that 21-18 away win over Abbeyfeale last week will play Thomond at Rathuard. The visitors had a 15-9 victory over St. Mary's last week and can expect another difficult task this weekend.

There are eight ties listed in the second round of the Cork County Cup. It starts tomorrow evening in Kinsale when the home side face Clonakilty in a game that has a 5.30 kick off. Kinsale who just missed out on promotion last season will be anxious to make a good start while the visitors will not know their starting fifteen until just before kick off as they await anxiously the availability of some players who may be involved in the club's senior cup game earlier in the day.

The remaining ties are all listed for Sunday and Youghal who have made a great start to the season following their victory in the Meteor Munster Junior Sevens and their 29-18 away win over Crosshaven last week in the opening round will be full of confidence when they visit Douglas at Moneygourney.

Shandon who will be playing their first game at Junior level travel to Charleville and will have it all to do if they hope to cause an upset.

Holder's Cobh Pirates begin their defence short several of their 1st XV squad with a home tie against Kanturk and new coach Robbie Doyle will be hoping to get off to a winning start at The Paddocks.

Skibbereen travel to Midleton and the home side boosted by a victory over Cobh last week could cause a shock and book a quarter final place.

Tommy Crowe who has returned as Coach to Old Christians, will hope that his charges can see of the challenge of Mallow at the North Cork venue.

Ballincollig having won promotion to the top tier of junior rugby have lost several players but should make their trip to Fermoy a winning won.

In the other tie it is an all second division clash when Bandon visit Muskerry and it should be a close contest as both strive to get their season of to a winning start.

The four quarter finals in the Dennehy Cup will also be decided. The big game is the meeting of arch rivals Cork Constitution and Dolphin at Temple Hill.

Highfield after their win over holder's Ballincollig will be confident of overcoming Old Christians at Rathcooney.

In the other two ties home advantage should give Bantry Bay the edge at home to Sunday's Well and Bandon should prove too strong for Carrigaline at Moneygourney.

Kinsale entertain Clonakilty in the O'Sullivan Cup and Crosshaven host Muskerry.
