The skills days are set out to target girls of the ages 12-13 years on the final year of Primary school. Introducing the girls to more main stream rugby and therefore helping to not only develop their skills but develop their interest in playing with a local club.
The day was co-ordinated with Ray Gadsden County Kerry Youth Development Officer and the local schools.
Despite the ominous weather the spirits were high as 130 girls turned up from all over to take part.
The development officers introduced them to handling skills, Evasion tactics, and some safely co-ordinated tackling.
The level of participation and enthusiasm was excellent and the PRO for Tralee RFC David Condon on the day was there to not only capture the images for the club but be amazed by the numbers and willingness to take part in everything.
It was as he said a bright light in the direction of Girls Rugby especially for Kerry Girls Rugby.
These skills days will be held for 6th class girls right across the province this season and by all accounts we will definitely be heading back to the kingdom in the very near future.
We would like to thank Tralee RFC for the use of their facilities and to the schools who participated on the day.
A huge thanks to Ray, John, Sean, Elliot, Ed and Frank for sharing their excellent knowledge, skills and patience on the day.
One thing is certainly sure after Wednesday the future is bright in Kerry and the kingdoms future female rugby players ROCK!
