Meteor Munster Sevens Battles the Weather

Despite the inclement weather, rugby fans turned out in numbers to support the inaugural Meteor Munster Sevens at Old Crescent RFC on Saturday, which now looks set to become an annual highlight of the rugby calendar.
The sixteen teams taking part made the best of the conditions, and put on a fantastic display of sevens rugby for the enthusiastic crowd present.  However, while the pool stages went off without a hitch, severe thunderstorms in the late afternoon ensured that only the Bowl final could be played, with Young Munster claiming a 24-0 win over Waterpark.  Waterpark had overcome Sundays Well 33-14 in their semi final while eventual winners Young Munster defeated Shannon 21-14 in their semi final.

The sixteen teams had been divided into four pools, with Dolphin, Bruff, UL Bohemians and Cork Constitution topping their respective pools and going forward to play in the Cup competition.  Cork Constitution disposed of local rivals Dolphin in one semi final, claiming a seven point victory, while UL Bohemians and Bruff couldnt be separated in normal time and had to play extra time, with UL Bohemians eventually claiming a 17-12 win.  Unfortunately, the final couldnt be played and so Cork Constitution and UL Bohemians shared the Cup title.

In the Plate competition, Garryowen and Thomond were drawn in one semi final, with Garryowen having a comprehensive 29-0 win and in the other half of the draw Nenagh Ormond claimed a 21-12 win over Old Crescent.  Again the final could not be played.

John Lacey, Meteor Munster Sevens Event Co-ordinator, commented on the success of the tournament overall saying Despite the rain we saw some superb sevens rugby being played here today and were already looking forward to next year and expanding the tournament even more.

With great support from Meteor, Old Crescent and all the crew at Munster Rugby the day ended with a brilliant festival atmosphere and a demonstration of true sportsmanship by the finalists he added.

Meteors Media and Public Relations manager Amanda Carroll said Meteor has a very strong presence here in Munster and we are proud to have teamed up with Munster Rugby for this hugely successful event today.

Congratulations to the winning teams, all the players who took part and sincere thanks to all the supporters who turned out to cheer on the teams despite the weather she added.

The event was a fun filled day of entertainment for all the family with younger supporters enjoying bouncing castles, a DJ, face painting, a delicious barbeque and more!

The Meteor Munster Sevens tournament also supported Headsup a new text service from Rehab, which aims to help young adults in difficulty by offering support group information for a range of issues via text.
