Girls Skills Camp Thurles RFC 20/11/2007
The Munster Rugby Womens Development Officer, Gemma Crowley, is working on a number of initiatives aimed at increasing the participation of girls in the sport of rugby. Already, successful competitions have been run and the number of girls teams is growing steadily. One of the initiatives we are pursuing is aimed at strengthening the links betweens schools and clubs, affording girls the opportunity of representing their school and their club. On Tuesday November 20th Munster Rugby held a rugby skills camp for girls at Thurles RFC. The camp ran from 11am until 1.30pm. Gemma Crowley, Bridget Ryan, Womens Youth Development Officer, Elliot Corcoran, Cork City YDO and Pat Fitzpatrick Thurles YDO took the girls through a series of skills sessions and games on the day.
The girls who came from Thurles Vocational School and Presentation Girls Secondary School were also addressed by Sean Lannigan Ryan, coach of the underage girls in Thurles Rugby club with an aim to get some of them participating in club rugby. A great day was had by all in this important step in opening up the game of rugby to greater participation by girls.
