A selection of players from the Daughters of Charity in Munster recently took part in a challenge match at Garryowen Rugby Club.
Kilfeacle scored seven tries in their 49-10 home win over Kinsale. Charles Walsh scored two tries for the winners and Diarmuid Carr, Bernard O’Callaghan, Jack O’Sullivan, Pat Ryan and Shane Morrison were Kilfeacle’s other try scorers. Gavin Heuston converted all seven tries. Joe Lyons and Stephen Coleman replied with tries for Kinsale. Kilfeacle will now face Cork Constitution in the last eight in two week’s time.
The difference between the top of Division 1 and Division 2 in the Munster Junior League was quite evident at Kanturk, when the home side booked a quarter final home tie with Garryowen after their 37-0 victory over Mallow. The winners led 19-0 at half time and had tries from Peter Earlie, Luke McCabe, Mike Twohig, Kealan Buckley and Mark Healy. Darragh Meade kicked three conversions and two penalties.
Clonmel easily over came the challenge of Ennis at the Clare venue 31-7 and will now face Clanwilliam away next weekend. Tries by Darragh Foley and Mark Jenkinson and two conversions and a penalty by Conor Cooney gave Clonmel a 17-0 lead at half time. Brendan Leo and Cormac Rea scored second half tries with Cooney converting both. John Moore replied with a try for Ennis and Conor Dolan converted.
Highfield edged out Tralee 26-19 in a close contest at Woodleigh Park. Paul Stack scored two tries for the winners, Fintan O’Sullivan got one and they were also awarded a penalty try. Colm Downes converted three of the tries. Daniel Clarke and Garret Walsh replied with tries for Tralee and Clarke kicked three penalties.
An excellent penalty into the strong wind fifteen minutes from time by David Shannon earned Skibbereen a narrow 10-7 home win over Cobh Pirates. Mike Calnan opened the scoring with a try for Skibbereen and Ger Hurley converted. The visitors were level before the break with a try and conversion by Greg Higgins but the Pirates kicker was off target with some kickable efforts after the interval.
Killarney defeated Bandon 22-16 in a very exciting Munster Junior Plate tie at the Kerry venue. Aidan Slattery scored a try for Bandon and Cathal Crowley kicked a conversion and three penalties.
Castleisland warmed up for their crucial Division Two encounter next week with Muskerry with a 25-15 home win over Third Division leaders Killorglin in the semi final of the McElligott Cup. Shane Flynn, Pat O’Leary and Mike Cronin scored tries for Castleisland, JJ Casey kicked a drop goal and Connie Reynolds contributed a penalty and two conversions. Killorglin replied with tries from Mark Healy and Darren Curtayne and a conversion and a penalty by Luke O’Shea.
A penalty by Darragh Clancy after sixty minutes was enough to give Richmond a 3-0 win over Thomond in the final of the Gleeson League.
In the Junior Two Cup South Carrigaline’s great run continues when they defeated Highfield 28-19. Tony O’Keeffe scored two tries for the winners and Clive O’Mahony and Ken Wilkins got one each. Steve Caul converted all four tries.
Carrigaline will be away to Shandon next week after the Whitechurch based side defeated Tralee 22-12. Peter Foley and Eoin Murnane scored tries for Shandon and Barry Leahy kicked four penalties.
Five penalties from Stephen McAuliffe was enough for Kanturk as they beat Kinsale 15-14.
Cork Constitution proved too strong for Mallow running out 50-0 winners. Simon Barry contributed 2 tries four Penalties and five conversions to his side’s tally. Jack O’Sullivan two, Sam Singleton, Eddie Quinn and Cian Parkes were the Temple Hill side’s other try scorers.
Garryowen and U.C.C. booked their place in the All Ireland Under 21 Cup next weekend with narrow victories. Garryowen edged out U.L. Bohemian 33-32 at Dooradoyle and U.C.C. defeated Highfield 26-25 at Woodleigh Park.
